Updated 4.8.1201 today... a question
« on: May 17, 2008, 01:57:38 AM »
Hello, I updated 4.8.1201 from 4.8.1195 today. I need to ask if this is normal. When avast ask me to restart after updating and I said yes. Then on the screen says *windows is shutting it down...* seems to hung up or stop about a minute or so. I had to use hard shutdown from the power button on the tower.

Then I rebooted again and avast asked me to restart again and I said yes....This time rebooted normal. So my question...is this normal??? Rose

I would say that it is not the expected sequence.

When I updated today from 4.8.1195 to 4.8.1201 My shutdown occurred without any hang and on restart I was up running with the new version and it did not ask for another restart.

To be sure you may wish to run a "Repair" from the options of the avast entry in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

I think you should waited a little more on the first time... one minute is not that time...

Its reboot fast and never stalls more than few secs. I was surprised but I will wait longer if it happens again. How long is normal?

I clicked on Repair just in case from Add/Remove. Kind regards, Rose

How long is normal?
After the antivirus update, maybe one minute, maybe less... depend on your system, but could be longer than the usual shutdown. Never mind, glad everything is working now.

I don't believe there will ever be a Normal as this is going to differ from system to system and would depend on what you have installed, first there are programs to close and on boot program to start apart from avast. So it is different to say what is normal, for you, Mine as Alan said rebooted without hang in what would be about Normal on 'my' system.

However, I would wait much longer before hitting the power button as my feelings are not to interrupt this process to early as I don't know what the consequences might be (hence Alan's repair suggestion), I would probably go and have a coffee, etc. and come back.

When asked if I would like any program to shut down I answer NO. I then proceed to shut down each program running at this time manually and then reboot. i have noticed in the past that say letting an update program do the reboot, it takes forever and a day to shut down.
Just my opinion though
Today when I update Avast to 1201, from the click to restart to full running again was less than 1 minute
