pop3 emails not downloading because of new avast

Hi,
 A day or so ago I installed the downloaded new version of Avast 4.8.
Suddenly I am not able to receive any of my pop3 emails into my Outlook express inboxes and the error says it has to do with avast.
What can I do to correct this?
I did disable the internet mail provider and it works then. But I'd like to keep that enabled.

Are you using a firewall? 

Have you given permission in the firewall to ashMaiSv.exe (the avast Internet Mail provider) to access the network.

yes..I use Comodo firewall and when it asked for permission I checked"give it permission".

Perhaps a little more background please.

Was this your first installation of avast or had you been using it before and just updated to the current version?

Can you please post the error message you are getting when you try to retrieve your mail?

I've been using avast for a couple of years..this installation was related to the popup by avast informing me a new version was available for download.
BUT, I think something might be working as when I disabled the avast internet mail provider I realised I only did it as a temporary process until I saw if it would work.
When the internet provider went back into action on its own I tried the pop3 email and it did download.
I don't know why it happened but it seems having just paused the internet mail provider made the difference..
