access denied
« on: May 25, 2008, 11:43:52 PM »
Hello, all of a sudden trying to make changes to my "MSconfig" I get "denied".
and AVAST shows messages by the clock. ( not sure why I am getting
messages from avast,I thought I turned that off, maybe it was only in the
"on access" area.
I terminated permanently, all the "on access" stuff, also and I am ofcourse logged in as admin with full access.
what to do ?
I feel it has happened since the last update, probably coincidence.
I ran full scans from avast, trendmicros housecall, and spybot.
nothing out of the ordinary.
I attached a pic.

It is an intentional aspect of the new avast self protection feature (new in avast 4.8 ).

Were you trying to make changes to the avast settings via msconfig?  Perhaps if you can explain your requirement there may be a way of performing the change via avast itself.

If you intend to override the avast self protection you need to disable it via avast Program Settings > Troubleshooting.  The change will be effective without restarting the system.

Hi there alanrf.
Welp, first I always disable avast and a few other things when I want to burn
cd's and the like.
and I have for years done these things by going into "msconfig" and
unchecking what I want to disable, and restarting.
usually as  and example, as far as avast is concerened, I would uncheck
verything related to avast in the startup tab, and then also in the services
tab.
now let me say a few other things.
on a different computer same avast version and all.
I tried to uncheck "ashdisp" in the startup tab and it didn't say anything to me
ALTHOUGH when I went right back to it the check mark was still there.
I did "exit with out restart". and did it a few times, never one message.
So then I went to the services tab and unchecked the only 4 avast items I
have there and when I clicked apply it did hollar at me with that denied error
and all that, and then I went back to it and they are unchecked, then I went
to the startup tab again, and the check mark was still on the ashdisp, and I
unchecked that and hit apply THEN I got the message/ error.
And I tried a couple other items NOT related to avast and I get the
message/error, so what you are saying or avast is doing is locking me out of making changes to my msconfig ?
that's not cool. Lol.
so How do I disable this ?
I have the need to make my own changes and monitor it my self.
for quite a few reasons, on top of having a old old, computer, p3@550,
512 mb pc100 ram. I also use this for troubleshooting purposes,
conflicts or whatever my reasons are. :D
Thanks for the reply.

I had assumed that the "exit without restart" option in MSCONFIG meant "please exit without any changes and leave everything as it was before I started MSCONFIG".

It is now clear to me that this means "keep my changes but just don't restart right now".  It is still not clear to me where the "forget it" option is.  That means the next restart is done with your request and without any warnings.  Ah for the days (now some years ago) when I could complain to MS in Redmond and changes got made.

Anyway, in the earlier post I explained to you how to turn off the avast self protection that is getting in your way.

If I may, I suggest that, after you are done, you turn on again the self protection of avast  - there are still those who seek to waylay unprotected systems.
