avast icon not moving
« on: May 26, 2008, 06:32:08 PM »
Whenever I come out of stanby mode, computer runs very slowly for about three minutes, then runs normally.  At this time, the avast ball does not spin at all. Even when I run scans, the icon does not move.  Any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Does it rotate at other times ?

The avast icon doesn't scan during on-demand scans.

When you come out of standby try and open the Task Manager and see if there is a process hogging all the CPU % and report your findings ?

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

Hello,

Thank you for your quick response.  The icon does not move at all. It used to spin around constantly, only stopping for a second or two. That was going to be another post for another time( does this ball ever stop spinning?). The only thing  that is showing any usage is system idle pr... @99%.  The other items are:

ash.disp.exe
ash.maisv.exe
ash.serv.exe
asw.updsv.exe
ash.websv.exe
all are showing 0%. Total cpu usage is 0-5%.

Hello,

I deleted an old combofix txt.file that did not uninstall itself from an earlier infection.  Did not note the file name. Then I ran ATF cleaner and rebooted the machine. Still had the three minutes of slow motion, but now the icon will spin when I open the browser, click on a link, etc. Will monitor for awhile.

System Idle process is the  available to any other processes.

I would check and ensure that you haven't disabled the animation of the icon, Program Settings, Appearance, ensure the Animate the icon when scanning is checked.

Hello

Thanks for the info DavidR.  Animate the icon when scanning box is checked.  Again, since I deleted those files and ran the cleaner, the ball has been spinning as it should. Just the slowness of the computer for the first three minutes or so after it comes out of standby is the only problem remaining.  Need suggestions about possible solutions for this problem.  Thanks in advance.

Sorry I can't help with the slowness after standby/hibernation if (now you have the animation enabled) the avast icon isn't rotation it isn't scanning and it shouldn't be in the loop as far as this slowness goes.

Have you tried a google search for computer slow coming out of standby, etc. and see what that returns. Seems like it is a common problem, see these results, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=computer+slow+coming+out+of+standby.
