Updates failing
« on: May 30, 2008, 10:30:57 AM »
I have just got a new PC running WinXPsp2 and use Outlook Express for e-mail on a dial-up connection.

Most often after I have been on Outlook Express for email, I get a message

"avast!  Information

An error has occurred while attempting to update!

Summary
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: cannot connect to download 944 avast.com (unknown 80)."

Re the "944" different messages have had "917", "615" and "74" here.

On two occasions instead of the above had the more positive message : "A new version of Avast has been successfully installed".

Can anyone tell me what the problem is, please? Am I correct in thinking that the update is failing to download when I get these error messages?

Do you have a firewall?

If yes, check this post from Tech:

Does a manual update work?

This is pretty much the same problem as your other post  on the 24/5/2008, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=35772.0, which I answered referring to possible firewall blocking but you didn't reply ???

Edit: date above.
