In fact, my "thanks" was only for the VRDB spinning icon, I'm always in trouble with avast not scanning :(

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

Again, isn't it any preinstalled antivirus (since you've installed XP again), aren't you restoring from a manufacturer CD?
In which path are you trying to install avast?

If after an installation from scratch the services aren't allowed to run, I can bet only 4 possibilities:
1. Another antivirus present (installed or bad uninstalled).
2. Another security program avoiding the correct installation of avast.
3. Windows Registry corruption.
4. Some problems with the path you're installing avast.

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

Great news : I formatted XP yesterday and today, after installing a new frsh avast... problem : RPC error !

Not compatible with SP3 ?

For sure it's compatible. Is there any OEM (preinstalled) software in your Windows installation CD? Which other security programs did you install?
I'm using avast in two XP SP3+ systems... tons of users have them also...
