Another question?
« on: June 06, 2008, 01:33:00 AM »
I have had some major issues with several websites- where the sites will not fully load. I have searched and SEARCHED the internet looking for advice and I'm constantly told it is my virus scanner that is likely causing this. I have tried everything with it- but not even knowing FOR SURE that is what is causing it- I'm not sure what to do.

I've added a pic of what the sites will pull up like- this particular one was myspace. But there are a few others as well like facebook.

When this first started, I had purchased my computer and all was perfect for several months. Then one day a couple graphics on MS wouldn't pull up. Then within a week or so- a couple more went... then a couple more- until there were NO graphics on my account OR anyone else's either.  I CAN see pictures if I have put them on MS using another host site like photobucket etc. I can also see all my friends' background themes on their myspace accounts and as well as some slideshows- which I assume are hosted on another site and linked in MS?

Now OTHER people can see my pics no problem- and I can also see ALL (mine included) on my old computer running XP... but not on this one (running vista).

I have posted this on Vista forums, MySpace forums and you name it! First everyone says ro clean the cache/temp and all that- BTDT. It's NOT that :(  Then they all seem to think it's got something to do with my virus scan or firewall. But I have shut OFF my windows firewall and still nothing is changed.

So I'm posting here to see if maybe you have an idea if it could be an Avast! issue- and if so- maybe you can help me to fix it :)

Here's my computer info:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Dell Dimension DXP061
Intel(R) core(TM)2 CPU    6600 @ 2.40GHz    2.39 GHz
Memory (RAM)  2046 MB
32-bit Operating System
Avast! Home 4.8 anti virus protection

Thank you!!!

Welcome to the forums, zeeky2.    :)

I am not a Vista user so I can be of little help. But, I am sure someone will be able to help you soon.

did you already try to stop the avast!-providers by rightclicking the A-symbol in the taskbar and choosing "end..."?
does that change anything?

did you use any other antivirus before?
do you use any other security program? (antivirus, antispyware, firewall)?
which browser do you use?

Unfortunately without a link to the pictures that you can't see in vista,
there isn't any way for me to try that link on my Laptop which is running Vista.

Thank you to all of you!

onlysomeone,  I have shut OFF Avast! and nothing changed. I just tried to do it as you suggested and when I right clicked the "A" on task bar I didn't see "end" but did choose "Stop On-Access protection". Still nothing different.

(these are the choices I had)

As far as using any other antivirus, I DID use Norton for a short time- that just came on the computer and I went to Avast! a bit later as I had GREAT success with Avast! on my XP.

I have IE. not sure what one as it just says "Internet Explorer" as I look.
I also use Firfox and use that most of the time. This issue was going on PRIOR to adding Firefox to this computer. There ARE some things I cannot do on the net, that I have to use IE and that works well. But I have tried BOTH on this issue and there is no difference.

I have CCleaner on here as well as Ad-Aware 2007. Other than that- I think anything else would be a Windows thing they had on here at purchase. I think I've seen something about Windows Fire Wall as well?

Edited to add:  I forgot to say that I also have "k9Web Protection" but I have it set to ACCEPT all on myspace. So I don't think it would be that? Unless there's a glitch in their product?

bob3160,

The best way I can share a link is to just have you go to ANY "Myspace" page and see if you can see the pictures.  I cannot see ANY pictures on MySpace OR PageBook. The graphics ALL look like those I shared in my first post. The *only* pics I can see in those sites are those linked from PhotoBucket or other host sites. I know MANY people CAN see them on their Vista machines but for some reason mine will just NOT show them.  I just today uploaded a picture of a rainbow that I took yesterday. http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&friendID=72105581&albumId=1837813
I uploaded it from my Vista comp and I know it's THERE- cause I can see it on my XP. But I cannot see it from this one.  This is what it looks like for me:

Here's the screen capture of Myspace:

As you can see, I'm not having any graphics issues using a Dell Vostro 1700 with
Vista Ultimate (SP1)

Mine slightly different, XP Pro SP2, Firefox with NoScript and CookieSafe add-ons, so I would imagine there would be some differences, but even so it displays reasonably well.

David,
zeeky2's problems only shows up on Vista.

Since I also use avast! on the vista laptop and don't have any display problems,
I doubt that the problems are avast! related.

Cybersecurity is more of an attitude than anything else. Avast Evangelists.

Use NoScript, a limited user account and a virtual machine and be safe(r)!

How did you remove it?
i would try to use this tool (although it already is uninstalled):
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Norton_Removal_Tool_for_Windows_2000XPVista/1169144666/1

after using this tool you should do a repair installation of Avast! (or uninstall and install it again)

did this help?

GOT IT!  I figured it out! And to think... it took me a WHOLE YEAR to do it... that's really sad LOL

Okay, after I read my last post over- I had written that I have k9 web protection on my comp- to keep little people outa things they shouldn't be into. I did have it set to let these sites in and it was I never changed after it's initial set up, but I'm assuming it had updated or something around that time and it just needed the setting adjusted a bit.

What I did was, I went into all my programs and looked at the dates of their activity (updates etc.) and realized THAT ONE had updated at the time this started to happen (marked in my brain only because my niece got married that day! LOL)  Once I saw the sites that COULD be the culprits- I played around in it till I found it!

I knew it was going to be something simple once we found it! And it was :)

Thanks so much for your time and energy on this!!  Take care!

Very good service if you want parental control or just filter the Internet by contents.
