I really need some help
« on: June 07, 2008, 07:56:24 PM »
When I installed the newest version of Avast, my computer has been acting strange. Im running Microsoft Windows Professional SP3 with an Intel 82815 integrated graphics, onboard integrated Soundmax sound card. Ok, before I installed the nwest Avast, my notification area in the taskbar always showed the Intel Graphics Technologies icon and the Soundmax Control panel icon, now they all disappeared, even the Avast icons disappeared.
Is there a booger in my computer?

Define acting strange ?

If it is just the Soundmax Control panel icon, check it isn't hidden (click the < arrow), could you not reinstall it ?

No icons are hidden. but it happened to all the icons the notification area. There were an Avast icon, an Intel Graphics icon and Soundmax icon. I can't reinstall Soundmax cause I don't have the install program for it. I have not uninstalled Avast yet though.

I have heard of similar issues but this is in win9x systems where resource management is notoriously bad and the icons go walk about when resources are low, but this isn't a normal/regular occurrence in XP Pro.

I certainly haven't experienced this in a little over 4 years that I have been using avast.

Have you tried a google search ?
I did, seems there are lots of hits, http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=XP+missing+icons+the+notification+area.

my laptop has this issue but it effects other icons as well, it seems random as sometimes the icons are there and next boot up some are gone

Better is starting a new thread for your specific questions.
Anyway, when a virus is found, the safer is "Send to Chest" for further investigating, never direct delete.

I've done a scan with SuperAntispyware Professional and didn't find anything. I also went to Intel Support to find out why my Intel Graphics icon disappeared, I was told to update the graphic drivers on my PC. I updated and now I have my Intel icon back in the notification area.
I still ain't found out how to restore the Avast icon :(

your curancy
What's curancy?

I still ain't found out how to restore the Avast icon :(
1. Check the option in the Appearance tab of settings.
or
2. Repair your avast installation through Control Panel.
or
3. Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder
or
4. Add the path to ashDisp.exe into a value named avast! in the Windows Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
See picture here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=26155.msg213891#msg213891

If that does not help, please, uninstall, boot, install again, boot.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc.?

Thanks Tech. I done what you said step by step and I got my Avast icons back. Maybe it was the SuperAntispy Professional that made the icons disappeared I don't know. I'm using Avast 4.8, McAfee Personal Firewall Plus w/Site Advisor, and SuperAntispyware Pro.
