Avast freezes towards end of scan
« on: August 17, 2008, 06:20:57 PM »
I've recently installed the latest version of Avast Free Edition. Over the last week I've performed a couple of scans. They both froze around 83%. The scan wasn't running and it stayed at 83% for a couple of minutes. Then it suddenly said that the scan was complete and 0 infections detected.

Is this normal? Can I trust it when it states there's 0 infections when I don't know if it actually completed the scan properly.

I've since run a couple of Ad Aware scans and had to removed quite a few tracking cookies etc.

Any advice would be appreciated.

let's not worry about tracking cookies for now
first update avast and then right click the ball and schedule a boot time scan
reboot
report back if any hits

Then go to Add remove programs and see if there are two versions of Avast
Which version did you upgrade from?
Long time user- any old versions?

might be best download a fresh copy of avast and save to a file
remove avast
run the avast uninstall tool
www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html

or

then do these
What if Windows Security Center Shows AntiVir or other muliple Antivirus products installed

One quirk with AntiVir (or any AV) causes it to still show up in the Windows Security Center even when its been uninstalled properly. If this is the case, please refer to this article to resolve it.

Using the AntiVir Registry Cleaner

If for some reason the normal uninstall does not work, you may have to download AntiVir's registry cleaner utility to remove all traces of it from the registry and allow you to reinstall it.

1) Click on the following link and download the AntiVir Registry Cleaner to your desktop

http://dl.antivir.de/down/windows/registrycleaner.zip

2) Create a folder on your desktop called Antivir and Unzip the file to your desktop
3) Double-click on the file called RegCleaner.exe to run it

4) Since the program is German, you'll have to click on the button called "keys asulesen" to search the registry for any issues. Then place checkmarks next to the registry entries you wish to delete.

5) Finally, click on the button called "loschen" to delete the keys

6) Restart your computer and try to reinstall your antivirus

that means reinstall avast :)

If your computer came with any other AV preinstalled or you have ever had Norton, Panda, Mcafee, AVG etc please follow the instructions/ links at the bottom of the pc hell page
