Error messege upon installation
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:17:09 PM »
Hi. My license/registration ran out so I uninstalled my Avast and have been trying to install the newest free Home Edition, but as it tries to finish the install it tells me one or more files could not be installed, so that it is not able to install at all. Does anyone know how to overcome this? I'm using Vista Premium. Thank you. BP

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
2. Boot.
3. Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
4. Boot.
5. Install again the latest avast! version.
6. Boot.
7. Check and post the results.

This seems to have solved the dilemma! I'm currently up and running with the latest 4.8 home edition version and it's just now starting up. I'm still getting an error message of a different sort, however, which tells me that the "splash screen for Avast! has stopped working" upon starting up the software.

Thank you for solving problem #1 for me.....

Did you install from the scratch and the error is still there? I mean, the splash screen error.
Did you have any other antivirus in the past in this computer?
Did you install (insert) avast registration key in this new installation?

Yes, I did all of these things, but I'm still getting the splash screen error message. I did have Norton Antivirus pre-installed on this computer, but uninstalled it immediately upon taking it home and setting it up. The splash screen error messages just started about 9 months ago, I'm guessing. I sometimes wonder if it's in conflict with Firefox web browser, as occasionally I don't get the message if my Firefox is not open...yet, still usually do!

Regards,
BP

can't recall exactly. Assume I went to programs and hit uninstall all components. Is there something more to do? I do recall talking with an HP rep about it online, so they might have guided me with the uninstall.

Is there something more to do?
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

Then you obviously didn't follow all the steps outlined in the tutorial I posted or all the steps
Tech posted. Maybe that's the reason why you're still getting your error.
Removing Norton isn't a simple matter of going to add/remove.   :o
