We have avast! 4 professional edition and would like to schedule automatic scans. Is this possible and if so, how can this be configured?

It is, you must be using the Enhanced User Interface though.
Check out the avast Help file, Enhanced User Interface, section, see image extract of the info.
Sorry I can't be that much practical help as I use the Home version.

Create a Task, select the area to be scanned, check advanced settings and configure the scheduler.
Or use the schedules with an already created Task.
