Hi I have an IBM ThinkPad & I am using Avast 4.8 Home Edition build 4.8.1201  VPS File Version 080706-0.

The on demand scanner says:
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\bc794.msi\Binary.SymLCSVC.9E3C0E2F_0873_4AD9_995B_D9DAAF9B9E76\[Embedded#XINSTALLDLL]\[Embedded#DODGY]
&
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\bc794.msi\Binary.SymLCSVC.9E3C0E2F_0873_4AD9_995B_D9DAAF9B9E76\[Embedded#XINSTALLDLL]\[Embedded#DODGY]

are both infected with Win32:Trojan-gen (other)

I have tried moving to the chest but this fails, what should I do now?

Seems false positives... Does the OEM version of your computer came with Symantec products installed?

Hi thanks for the reply.

Yes it does but I can see no reference to Symantec in the folders I can see on the system, I can not see the folders that Avast seems able to find.

Is there a tool I can run?

 :)  Hi :

Have you tried running the "Norton Removal Tool", One of which can be found
 at www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html   !?

Yes it does but I can see no reference to Symantec in the folders
1) Remove NAV through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
2) Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista. Boot.
3) Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

I can not see the folders that Avast seems able to find.
Maybe you need to disable Hide protected operating system files and enable View hidden files and folders to manage the file(s).

Hi thanks for the replies.

I could not see the folders Avast was referring to even with show hidden files & folders + show system files enabled so I could not point an on-line scanner at them. >:(

But anyway it does not matter because even though Norton was uninstalled just after the laptop was last reformatted (it is part of IBM's image) and so does not appear in add & remove programs or program files or Common Files when I ran the latest Norton removal tool it seemed to spend ages un-installing something the processor light was working over time ???

I then rebooted, emptied system restore & did a thorough scan including archives with Avast & Hey Presto it was clear (apart for a load of files it could not open which seems par for the course for most scanners)

Thanks for your help! ;D ;D ;D

I've seen fewer files that could not be opened if I close other programs that are running before I start Avast.
