My Avast 4.8 Home Doesn't Update Automatically
« on: July 06, 2008, 08:18:02 PM »
I installed Avast 4.8 yesterday and it updated automatically but today when I turn on the pc it doesn't want to update automatically (no blue message and nothing). Then I updated it manually to the most recent update file. But why avast doesnt update automatically today? what I have to do?

 :)  Hi :

 First, we need to know the name of your previous antivirus program AND IF
 you used its "Removal Tool" IF One exists !?

 2nd: "Automatic Updates" are usually done AFTER selecting that Setting in
 the "Program Settings", which is accessed by RIGHT-clicking on the "a" ball ;
 have you done that !?

Please, post the last 200-250 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

It's strange that you can manually update but not automatically...

There wasn't an automatic update earlier today (so you wouldn't have got a blue notification), but there just has been one. So that might account for it, if you remained on-line it would be 4 hours before it checked again, so again it is possible that you did a manual update before the next update check.

Provided you aren't getting a Red notice pop-up (update failure) you are probably OK, certainly leave it for a day or so and see if it does auto update.

Please, be sure: you didn't remove AVG (only disabled it) or, in fact, you've uninstalled it?

Like David said, automatic updates could not be more than daily (or two).
Check your avast logs (right click the 'a' blue icon) on 'Notice' folder. Isn't there any automatic update logged there?

Check into avast Log Viewer in 'Warning' section if there are automatic updates logged there.

Hmmm... if you've set to automatically update, than it's bad because it's not updating...
What did you set into Program Settings > Update (Basic)?

Automatic is what it's set at. should i uninstall avast and do a reinstall it was updating itself up till yesterday.

Not meaning to hijack this thread
But
What Firewall?
using zone alarm

On my system which also was previously AVG

after clicking manual update
OR
after a day or so when auto update should have run
update will run
if I turn Firewall off  for a brief period of time
or
If I reboot

I may watch this thread to see how you solve this one
you think :)

about the only things I have left to do is run the Norton, Panda, and other removal tools- McAfee
This system has had em all at one time or another

This may have been asked already but in addition to AVG did your system come pre-installed with any AV?
