« on: August 09, 2008, 05:35:15 PM »
Hi there

I am not very good with computer. After I download AVAST, it detect a number of files are infected with win 32 virut-B. It prompt me to take some action so I click on repair all, but it said file cannot be processed. So next I click moved to chest and it said the same thing.

I am not sure if i should click delete as the files infected were window explorer exe file and system volumn restore files.

Do I have to re-installed window? Is there anything else i can do beside re-installing window?

Please help! Thank you so much in advance.  :'( :'(

http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-030116-3455-99&tabid=3

rates the risk as very low so let's not panic
first rt click on the ball and update avast then rt click again and schedule a boot time scan and reboot

It looks as if some of the removal tools such as rmvirus.nt can get this one
google the name

Virut I wouldn't class as low risk it is very virulent polymorphic virus, http://www.avast.com/eng/win32-virut.html.

Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.4.6112 (build 24.4.9067.762) UI 1.0.803/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

oops

avast detects
removal?  will boot scan get it?
what next?
MBAM?

awaiting results of boot time scan
. Temporarily Disable System Restore

"Looking at the Dr Web site I see they had a news item saying that they know about the virut.5 virus and they appear to be the only system that will actually clean it. I ran their free CureIT edition of their scanner and sure enough it cleaned up over 2500 exe files."

Also Microsoft malware removal tool may work
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ad724ae0-e72d-4f54-9ab3-75b8eb148356&displaylang=en

any others?
EWIDO-AVG-Anti Spyware (if you can find it)

Thanks guy,  Dr web cure it sound good so I am giving it a try.
I will update the result when it is done.

One more question, is it not possible for Avast to clean up the win 32 virut B virus and  repair the corrupted file at the same time? ???

If avast has done a repair tool for that virus it would
However you will see that each of the AV companies have tools for different specific viri
then everyone uses what works
I just used google
I've been around long enough to know which (I think) are reputable tech sites and which are shills that want to separate you from your money with their free scan but pay to remove hype
So if microsoft tool is reputed to work, or MBAM or whatever that's what to use
Why we want to use the updated avast scan first is to see if there is anything else running

this virus can infect many .exe files thousands
some fixes leave the files damaged
so having two other (besides avast) firms, Dr Web and MS with potential fixes is a big help

Hi there

I had ran Dr Web cure it and it also found the win32 virut B, as well as win32 trojan.
Dr Web said it had cured about 60 files but 3 files there was no action.

I then ran Avast again but the same files were picked up and cannot be processed.

However I am trying the microsoft one now and see if it work.

Sure
try the AVG tool
another reputable company
and as was said above there are lots of versions of this malware

Did you run avast as a "boot time scan??"
avast could not process with a reboot?
you might want to try KAspersky on line scan

anybody know where he can get a copy of EWIDO- AVG Anti malware it is reputed to work

get ready to post a HJT after trying these last several things- or anytime
there is a stickie at the top of this forum that tells how

we may want to check for root kits if it cannot be "processed"

you realize we are playing whack a mole here
sooner or later we'll get him
