I have encountered a problem with the new 4.8.1227 update.  After updating and restarting, my computer hangs for several minutes after the wallpaper loads.  It takes several minutes for the taskbar and desktop icons to appear.  This happened after I used the Program Update feature of the earlier version (4.8.1201) and also after I uninstalled the old version (first with the Control Panel add-remove applet and then with the Avast uninstall tool, rebooting after each step), did a fresh install of 4.8.1201, and updated again.  After uninstalling the new version and reinstalling the old version, everything is OK.  Has anyone else run into this problem?

I am using Windows XP SP3, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+, Online Armor firewall, IE7, and Mozilla Thunderbird.

I have installed a complete install, of the Avast! 4.8.1227, Home/Free, French language version.
-----

I have Windows Vista Ultimate Fr. Canada, x64, SP1.
-----

I see even that new version of Avast = 4.8.1227, have Avast x32 files, resident in memory.

ashDisp . exe [x32]
ashMaiSv . exe [x32]
ashServ . exe [x32]
ashWebSv . exe [x32]
aswUpdSv . exe [x32]

---------------------

Then where is the x64 files ?

There was a question over in the Beta topic (now closed) about how quickly the beta process went, and I thought I'd comment on that here.

Between the great work of the Alwil team, and the feedback from beta testers, betas here do tend to proceed to final release fairly quickly, typically a couple of weeks or less.  That's for sub-versions like this new one, of course -- full versions, like the upcoming avast 5, will probably take a fair bit longer in beta before becoming final.  And as has almost always been the case in the past, we'll probably see quite a few sub-versions of 5, particularly in its early days, to fine-tune it and clean up bugs that either didn't turn up in beta or stubbornly defied fixing.

Problem: Avast! 4.8.1227 update!
« Reply #9 on: July 20, 2008, 09:05:32 PM »
Updated my XP SP2 to V4.8.1227 via the internal updater and all appeared to be working as expected. After the update Avast requested a reboot and from that time forward my computer became inoperable. Booted into Safe Mode, used System Restore to an earlier date and all appeared well. Avast again asked for a system reboot and once again computer froze. In the end I uninstalled Avast using the uninstaller found on the website and my computer is functioning normally once again. But I'm without an AV program. Avast had been working very well for months and was fully compatible with my FW (Online Armor). Any advice or insight would be much appreciated.

Tsimmes,

Online Armor crashed my computer and made it unusable.  I had to use system restore.  I suggest you uninstall Online Armor & reinstall avast!.  ZoneAlarm fw works great with avast! & WinPatrol. ;)

Others also had problems with Online Armor crashing their systems, some had to do a complete reinstall of their os, I was lucky that I was able to do a system restore.

Thanks for your reply rdmaloyjr. Avast and Online Armor had been getting along just fine until I ran the internal updater for the latest program update. Why would this happen?

I have answered your other topic you created about this, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=37224.msg311637#msg311637.

Computers are complex things and occasionally something happens and you can be sure when changes are made that is a possible reason, but it is difficult to pin down exactly as there really isn't any information to work with.

I have no problems with the latest update on this W98 machine  will run a scan tonight

Alright!  That's what I'm talking about!  THAT's what I want to hear.   :)  I haven't gotten the little Green Pop Up Box yet informing me of the New version being available.  But, I guess I'll be getting it sometime between now and tonight or tomorrow.  And since I have Windows 98SE, it's sure good to read at least 2 Posts with Win98 Users NOT experiencing problems with the Update.

I'm not not as worried about my computer too much.  If a problem arises, I'm sure I can handle it eventually.  I'm worried about my sister's computer.  She's had avast! only a little while.  THIS will be her 1st PROGRAM Update.  I already gave her the Heads Up to be expecting the little Green Box and to click on it and to then just step away from the keyboard and let the PROGRAM Update run its course ... and to Click to acknowlege the Restart if need be.  But, if their Dell with Windows XP experiences problems after the Update ... Woooooooo!  They're gonna Freak Out.

There is a 7 day cycle for program updates to spread server load. That is the benefit of being a regular in the forums, you get to find out first, do a manual program update and jump the queue.
