Virus warning in free audio software
« on: July 25, 2008, 10:49:45 PM »
I try to download a well known free audio converter at
http://softwaredepo.com/audio_converter.html

But avast stops me and claims that the package contain
Win32:Adware-gen [Adw]

Can someone check this out?

The detection is confirmed by Kaspersky. If you feel it's incorrect, submit it to virus[at]avast.com.

Nowadays, besides the false positives, people, avast is being the first of detecting some viruses. I don't know about this one in particular, but it's happening both extremes: false positives and first to detect. Good and bad.

Actually I think this one was right :-)

I disabled the Web-filter and downloaded the install package.

When installing it warned about this software beeing free only because a web-behaviour collecting software would be installed on your system (this is the one avast! warned about).

But since I can remove spyware later I installed anyway, and guess what....  :-)

avast! on-access scanner detected the spyware install package and gave me a change to kill it, but then the rest of the installer continued as normal and the main program (the audio software) was installed OK :-)

Nice :-)
