Buffer overrun detected!
« on: April 06, 2004, 02:08:19 PM »
Hi

Installed Avast home no probs for a while
Now, whenever I launch OE I get:
"Microsoft Visual C++ rumtime library"
"Buffer overrun detected!
Program:....ogram files\alwil software\avast4\ashmaisv.exe

A buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the program's internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated"<ok box>

I have tried re-running the mail protection wizard
Automatically protect future accounts is unchecked
Completing the wizard doesn't fix the problem

Os is windows ME
I am behind a linux firewall

help please!
many thanks
rob

Do you use the latest build (357) of avast?

Do you use the option 'Send and receive messages at startup' in OE ? Could you try to disable it ?
I'd like to know if it occurs as you start OE or as OE begins to download mail.

You can also try to repair the installation in Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs->avast! Antivirus.

thanx for the suggestion - didnt get chance to try it cos it has fixed itself.

I think the error was being caused by an email (or amount of emails!) i had in my in queue. heres what i did:

I removed the 127.0.0.1 loop back  - re-entered my servers POP3 details (i needed to check my emails urgently)

downloaded my emails unprotected (38 genuine - god only knows how much spam!)

re-entered the avast 127.0.0.1 settings

all working fine again

Ill keep you posted if future emails manage to crash avast

cheers
rob

Do you still have the e-mails?
Could you forward them to us?

We'd be extremely interested in them...
Especially if you could find out which one exactly is causing the problems...

Thanks
Vlk

For what it's worth, I've been getting exactly the same error today - only solution was to do as you did and remove the localhost email scanner. I'm using build 357.

Vlk, just to post: no error with OE + avast and no error either if I choose the option 'check mail on the startup'. Everything works fine. Maybe I do not receive that 'interesting' emails that you want to see  ;D

I have the same problem.  It just started yesterday.  I have Eudora as my email client.  I have Avast 4.1.357.  I have Win98, 384 RAM, 233 Pentium.

I'll try the suggestion above to get my latest batch of emails.

Tony

People, seriously, we'd NEED the email in question... without it, it's gonna be extremely difficult to fix this problem!

Thanks

I got my emails by changing my ports in Eudora to be the listen ports of SpamPal.

I'll put them back & try again.

Sorry, but I got >100 emails, I cannot tell which one caused your problem.
