Automatic Program Updates
« on: July 27, 2008, 11:01:29 PM »
I have Avast set to update the Virus definitions and program automatically. The virus definitions update daily no problem but I have yet to see the program update automatically. I am currently running, Build: May 2008 (4.8.1201).  The current version is Build: July 2008 (4.8.1229)

What version are you using, Home or Pro ?

The default settings are best so should be left that way, avast Program Settings, Update (Basic):
Virus database, Automatic, will check when you connect to the internet and every 4 hours if you remain connected. Program, Ask when update is available, this will display a pop-up notification when a program update is available, click that to get it then or do it manually when you aren't busy.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.2.6105 (build 24.2.8918.824) UI 1.0.799/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

I am using the Home/Free version and changed the settings you have a pic of to have program updates done automatically.

Are you saying that the program will not update automatically in the Home version?

No in the Pro version there addition options that can be set-up.

The program updates, because they are likely to be much larger than the small incremental updates of the virus signatures, you wouldn't want them downloading and installing whilst you were in the middle of something important. So that is why the default is to check if an update is available, notify the user and Ask if they want to update then.

David I remain a bit puzzled as to why Anthony still is using version 4.8.1201 when the current build is 4.8.1229.  I mean he should at least be getting notified of updates and be prompted to update with the default settings however it would appear since May 2008 that hasn't happened.  From his post it appears this is why he is concerned.

Just seems odd he'd be using a version of the program 28 patches old if the program was updating properly or, by default, notifying him of application updates he could download.

He did make changes to the default settings so there would be no notification that no update was available and if set to automatic, if that didn't work there would be no pop-up or audible notification that an update was done.

So he would be none the wiser unless there was a Red update failure pop-up, which he made no mention of.

With it set back to the defaults he should see there is a pop-up program update available if he still has 4.8.1201, we will have to wait further input from Anthony to see if he gets that notification of a program update being available.
