Hi fungranny and welcome to the avast family,

It's not clear where you're having problems -- can I assume you can start the program OK and the interface (Status screen)?  If so, right-click anywhere on that and select Settings from the menu, and you'll find most of what you're looking for.

Most of the default settings are just fine, at least to start out with -- let us know if there's specific areas you'd like help with.

Best,
Mike

Oh gosh well I left things the way they were when I installed this.  But now I find that something isn't set up correctly because I get a message after I scan that says oh gosh I closed it........but can't scan because of settings..........I have done tons of scans since I installed this in March and that log is very very long......42056 error I looked and looked but couldn't find out why I got that.

I am an old lady and removed AVG for this program but if it can't scan everything I worry.

Why don't you open the log file, select all the contents, delete, run a new scan and then see the log file again...?

This will 'empty' your log file and with the last one you can post your problems and/or doubts...

Wellcome  ;)

Probably, C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Data\Report
We are talking about reports not logs (sorry my mistake).
The name of the file will be the name of the task that you run.

In Settings, there's an option for Reports to Overwrite previous report.  If you select that, it'll save only the most recent results each time so the report file doesn't accumulate and grow into a monster.

There might be times, of course, when you'll want a more complete history for tracking down problems.  But the vast majority of the time, just the current report will do fine.
