It does seem odd, however, that these 3 files are no longer in the System32 folder and IE started screwing up around same time.
Maybe you need to disable Hide protected operating system files and enable View hidden files and folders to manage the file(s).

Thanks, checked that, the folders were set appropriately - but the files are still not shown in the Windows System32 folder, where Avast shows them originally being located.

Correction, they are there - my mistake.  Now on to my IE problem.......
