ZONEALARM FORCEFIELD + version 4.8.1229
« on: August 13, 2008, 12:30:53 AM »
This is a free download today.Will this program conflict with Avast? I have Home Edition 4.8.1227.As a side note I haven't upgraded to 4.81229 because there seem to be some problems from reading this forum and it works fine right now.Is there a reason to upgrade?If i upgrade and have problems how can I go back to my current version.?

should not conflict
be the pioneer  you know the one with the arrows in the back
forcefield any pc anytime *
* read the fine print**
** xp and vista only

did you check the change log to see what was different in .1229?
In general you are better off and better protected with the later version but check it out

I don't know what problems you refer to relating to 4.8.1229 or how old the topic is or if there has been a conclusion reached in the topic or even if it relates to your system set-up as you provide no information. 1229, was essentially minor fixes for things in 1227 so if that is working fine you shouldn't have any issues with 1229.

Personally I would give forcefield a miss until it is a little longer in the tooth and has proven results.

If it is anything like the ZA Free/Pro firewall which did poorly in firewall tests it wouldn't 'force' (pun intended) me to try it.
See http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php.

Trying ZF now with Avast Home 4.8.1229. No noticeable slowdowns or problems as of yet. You can right click the ZF System Tray Icon and choose to open your browser, open private browser, or open unprotected browser. As far as protection however, all the reviews and tests I have read so far on ZF indicate it is anywhere from mediocre to ok, but they all agree it's good as far as an added layer of protection. I'm not sure if it is a keeper, but so far I like it. I also have ThreatFire running and use Windows XP SP3 with Windows Firewall behind a Linksys SPI firewall wireless router.

+1 on that!  :)

I looked at that Zone Alarm ForceField (ZAFF?) and if you're running avast! Home and using Firefox 3, you've pretty well covered 90% of what ZAFF does.  Add Threatfire 3.5 and that'll take you to 150%.  Providing you tweak aav, ff and tf to "paranoid" levels, that is...   ;)

All right you talked me into uninstalling it. LOL. Seriously though I do agree with you. Although it does scan downloads which I like, Avast has caught a trojan or three with it's Web Guard, and ThreatFire has been reported to do well in prevention also. Take care.

Thanks for the heads up. I may use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall. It does run a process even when shut down. See if ISWSVC.exe is still running in your Task Manager. I think I will stop it before trying to uninstall. Thanks again for the report.
