Mark,

By any chance were you referring to the "a" ball spinning when ever you "downloaded" anything in your browser, and if so perhaps what you are referring to is the Avast Web shield scanning. It should work with Firefox3.

If you left click on the "a" ball in the task bar, click on the detail button (if shown) on the screen that comes up and then scroll through the Shield icons until you find the Web Shield one. Is it running? If it is, but the count of files scanned is zero after you have browsed through a few web sites, click on the Customise button and check that the three tick boxes on the Basic Tab are all ticked, and that the redirected HTTP port is set to 80. If you make any changes, click on OK.
