Need Help with Troj/BHO-GN infection

(1/1)

mpt:
My computer was acting up, but my symantic antivirus and spyware doctor were not detecting anything.  On the advice of a computer specialist, I uninstalled those programs and installed Spysweeper with antivirus.  It immediately detected 11 infections, one of which was Troj/BHO-GN.  All infections were deleted except that one.  I have run the scan multiple times since, I have contacted the Spysweeper support techs, I have run searches, and cannot seem to get rid of this infection.  I have run tests in safe mode, deleted unused files, and everything else I can think of.  I am also attempting Windows Live OneCare scan, but it has yet to complete.  Can anyone offer any advice on how to remove this?

Additional info:

I have Windows XP
The location of the infection is windows/system32/_C00FC2A0.dat

I don't know much about computers, but I am guessing this infection is causing my annoying continual popups (most of which seem to be related to what I am surfing as though it were tracking my activity), messing with my antivirus and firewalls (settings keep being changed and programs randomly shutdown, and pc is slow in general.  I have been told I may have to re-format the hard drive, but I am hoping to avoid that.  Thanks for any help.  BTW, please answer in laymens terms so I can understand exactly what needs to be done.

**Updated:  I apologize, but I have just realized that Avast is apparently a software I need to purchase.  Microsoft links to this site for infection issues.  Told you I don't know much about this stuff :)

 :)  Hi :

Since this is the Avast Support Forums and you do NOT have Avast, I
recommend you ask for help on the Excellent Castlecops Forums, specifically
 at www.castlecops.com/f67-Trend_Micro_HijackThis_Logs.html  .

It is really strange that Spyware Doctor did not find something that Spy Sweeper did
Just goes to show you that on any given day any product can be the best- just like NFL Sunday
Both Spysweeper and Norton are excellent products - if a "little" bloated
I'd be interested if Windows Live one care found anything
be careful about conflicts with Norton- PS did you run the Norton uninstall utility
If not you are looking for problems down the road

Avast is a good program
CastleCops is an excellent site for hard to fix problems
before you go there - finish the MS scan
Download and Run Malware Bytes Anti Malware and their Rogue Remover (both free) Click REMOVE
post a log if they find anything- if they do not CastleCops or the Malware Bytes forum
http://www.malwarebytes.org/forums/index.php?s=45dddb9fa76cce9f6b2dafdfec641a8d&showforum=7
(they might be interested if their product does not remove YOUR infection)
Wherever you go
DO read the Stickies and follow their instructions EXACTLY

Come back when you are done and we'll finish cleaning your system, removing NAV, etc
Avast is Free for personal use
