Just wanted to bump this.... seems similar to the infection I just cleaned up.
I was infected by AntiVirus XP 2008 and RichVideoCodec, and a couple other virus. I also had my wallpaper tab and screen saver tab removed.

The initial infection vector was "wmcodec_update.exe" I am not sure if my wife downloaded this and ran it, or if a java/firefox vulnerability was used to download then run it. It was in the trash, but came from her folder inside "my documents".

I used Avast boot time scan to clean up the some of the mess. I also used Malwarebytes' software to finish cleaning up.

I uploaded wmcodec_update to http://www.virustotal.com . Here is the report. http://www.virustotal.com/analisis/207632e17389602b5a19f0940b1b5520
More info on wmcodec_update here. http://info.prevx.com/aboutprogramtext.asp?PX5=D1239C3527E5526DEC49048B5DF64C009681CBDE

What is the preferred/proper method of sending the file to Avast to get it into the next definitions update?

Still having issues with a your screensaver or wallpaper tabs missing?
AV XP 2008 removed my Wallpaper tab, and my screensaver tab, and I needed to go into the Group Policy Editor to restore them.
Click start -> Run. type in gpedit.msc
Navigate to User Config > Admin Templates > Control Panel > Display.
Hide Desktop Tab should be disabled
Hide ScreenSaver Tab should be disabled.
check the others to make sure nothing else is missing

thanks for the tip for our star *

for your own problem
just zip it up and password protect
put the password in the body of your email to virus AT avast.com
appropriate subject

If you want to persue your problem I would recommend a scan with kaspersky just to double check
secunia software inspector
etc

start your own thread if you feel the need to post back
thanks again

Hi,
Thanks to all.  I was out in the country for a few days.

And by the way WYRMRIDER, I am a "HE:-\ ;D ;D
from French Québec: JEAN (french) = John...   8)  ;D ;D

I'll start by checking gpedit.msc.
Then do what u said.
Lastly I'll write to Jean in Montana.
(I suppose this is a "JEANNE"...  ;) )

Again Thanks to all of you.
Even if it's not such a big problem...
But I persist... and still hope

I did that, and did not found any PANEL CONTROL in gpedit. (pic included)

But after reading your post, I see you lost your tabs.
It is not the case with me.  I still have theses tabs.
And I can configure any screen saver.  But I HAVE to.
No screen saver will start simply by double clicking
on the application like I used to do before.
If I do so, I just get the configuration panel of the SS!
That is the core of my problem.  I MUST configure a screen saver.
It won't run otherwise simply with a DC, like any other application.

Thanks anyway,
JEAN*

Hi Wyrmrider,
I have posted my question here and at Tech Guy Support only.
Do you think again a good idea to post to Jean in Montana
as you suggested in a precedent post?
Or may be I should forget all that... ;D
But I am very curious.  I'd like so much
to know what happenned!

That kaspersky suggestion was for
I_got_a_virus
who sorta hijacked our thread

Can't hurt
join her forum and post where I suggested
If says no I have one more idea

put a link to this thread
she's one of the best
be sure to read her instruction and do everything asked including whatever she asks for in first post
explain the other tools already used
and that this is not a malware hunt
perhaps she knows a windows expert that can sort this out

Here's a résumé of the problem:

I had 2 viruses that I think are the cause
of a SCREEN SAVER PROBLEM I have now...

THE STORY :

I used to be able to open DIRECTLY some Screen Savers I have in a FOLDER.
A left double click and it would start and run IMMEDIATELY, like any other program.

Then, I HAD those viruses (not detected by AVAST!!) :
AV2009 and also blphcv8e3eab.scr,
I GOT RID of the viruses and made a big CLEAN-UP of my PC.

After that, I realised I had a problem with my Screen Savers,
and posted on AVAST and TECH SUPPORT GUY Forums.

FROM THAT, it seems my problem was NOT understood properly!!
  ;D  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I spent some 4 days doing what everyone told me,
i.e. run Spybot, EusingRegistryCleaner, MBAM, SAS, SpyWareBlaster,
Panda online, KASPERSKY, SECONIA, SmitFraudFix, and what not...
And a lot of HJT to everyone that would ask for it!   :P  :P

ENOUGH OF IT!     :'(  :'(

NOW,  back to my SS PROBLEM: it won't go like before.
Since the Viruses experience, when I try to run a SS directly,
instead of running immediately, I will only get a configuration window.
The only way now to run a SS is to install it each time.
(Right click, then install, etc...)
Before they would ALSO run immediately, like any other application
I open with  normal left double clicks.  It was not necessary to Install it!

Now I'm gonna have a drink!!    :D :D ;) ;)

I simply can't understand why anyone uses screen savers since the virtual death of the CRT monitor there use is pretty much redundant. Even then why not simply go into standby, I don't hang around to watch my screen saver run, I would much rather it just went into standby.

I obviously don't use the avast screen saver for either the VRDB or antivirus scan, I much prefer to do these manually as a part of my regular weekly system maintenance.

I can't see the fun in it when I'm not at the computer ;D, when I am I'm working, browsing, etc. so the screen saver isn't running.

For some time I never even had a background wallpaper (just a coloured background, very spartan), but have made a concession ;D
