Unable to Update Virus Patterns
« on: September 28, 2008, 06:47:03 AM »
I am using iBook G4 (PowerPc) and just installed avast! for mac edition.
When I hit the 'Update Now' botton, the downloading process never succeeded.
Earlier, I got 400.vps.bad files on my desktop, and now the programme stops
responding when the botton is hit. :'(

Could I just go to the avast! website and manually download the virus patterns?
That's just what I does with the avast! on my pc. (I visited the website but found
only that availble in exe file type.) ???

Many thanks in advance for your kind help!  ;)

This is caused by
1) bad connectivity which causes truncated 400.vps files to be downloaded - such files are reported as those "bad" 400.vps. Correct and complete 400.vps should end with "ASWSignd" (in terminal utility, type: tail -c 8 some_vps_file)

2) rare temporary desync on one of our servers - in this case, just try downloading again after a while. Next server will be selected, with (hopefully) correct content, and vps wil be updated.

Always working hardcore-solution is quitting the application and agent (make sure persistent mode is off, in preferences), and getting the 400.vps file from http://files.avast.com/files/latest/mac/400.vps - and placing it to its rightful place (~/Library/Application Suport/com.avast.MacAvast).
