Wrong architecure

Is there a version for the 64-bit architecture? I don't even know my Pentium 4 processor is a 64-bit until I notice it downloaded AMD64 packages during updates and some software installs.

Hallo,
in the majority of todays 64-bit distros (where the size really doesn't matter, 64-bit binaries always more bloated than 32-bit one) the ia-32 compatibility layer is usually present (or ready for installation). With CONFIG_IA32_EMULATION-enabled kernel and the subset of legacy IA-32 libraries, avast will work with no problem.

Just, when installing, you might need to tell the installer that the IA-32 (i386) architecture labelled package is the proper one, to override internal checks, for example:

dpkg --force-architecture -i xxxx.deb

of course, the example with *.deb applies exactly to the Ubuntu.

I know this is a dumb question but,

will it turn my 64-bit install to a 32-bit?

Unfortunately (yes, I'm a bit bitter about the 64-bit hype) nope - your distribution will stay fully 64-bit, but will be able to run legacy 32-bit applications too :).
