Installation Problem
« on: September 07, 2008, 02:53:50 PM »
Hello:

I have been using AVAST for some years now without a problem but yesterday, something removed my Firewall (Comodo), AVAST, and SpySweeper. Now when I attempt to reinstall the latest version of AVAST, I get an error box which states: "There was an error while completing the setup process" and that's the end. I can't make hide nor hair of the log )attached) so I thought I would ask this forum for suggestions!

Thanks in advance.

Is the folder "C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4" empty?

Try to remove all remains of previous installation using uninstall utility:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

After restart, install avast again.

As someone that reads this forum frequently for tips
and knowledge, I would be very interested in knowing what
it was that can remove all the protections from a system.
The only way I can even think of to do that, short of uninstalling, would be
if I re-imaged my disk. Can you possibly share any info you have on what
it was that was able to remove your firewall, anti-spyware, and your anti-virus?  :o

Thanks to Forejt!! I was unaware of the uninstall utility for AVAST!! That suggestion did the trick - I did have to go to SAFE mode - something my machine has had problems with

To PapaSmurf (if anyone finds out that I'm writing to Papa Smurf, there goes my reputation!!!): I don't know what causes this - I've read that some viruses do this - I also don't know how they do it - I guess you'd have to be one of them to know! But I have a graph of activity on my network always showing on my desktop and if I see something strange I turn everything off! This time, however, I just noticed that the symbol for my firewall had gone away. Then I noticed the others were gone too and unplugged the network immediately!

Thanks again for the suggestions!
