Welcome tnelis

It looks like you are running AVG and this is the Avast forum.

Print out the SDFIX guide:

Now download MBAM then run it after updating its latest definition files:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

In Internet Explorer ask him to go to Tools then Windows Update then download and install Service Pack 3.

The sun Java version he is running is down level and has security exposures.

Download JavaRa then run it and un-install all old versions of sun Java:
http://raproducts.org

Get the latest version of Sun Java:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Go to Secunia: Online Software Inspector and run it to detect other insecure applications:
http://secunia.com/software_inspector

Ask your Dad to not click on any > download links in future.

with mbam put a check next to hits then click REMOVE CHECKED a backup will be made

FYI
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Do NOT fix this one it's a legitimate one.

OBJECT NAME GUID STATUS FILENAME DESCRIPTION
Windows Live Call HoverToCall class {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} L BHO htc.8.1.0178.00.dll Windows Live Messenger

"L" - Legitimate items
"BHO" - Browser Helper Object

if you have removed windows live messenger
or do not use it anymore you can FIX it with HJT
It's then just garbage in your registry

HijackThis may report (no file) wrongly in some areas, but not in the 02 group. The file is missing. To restore it, the program needs to be reinstalled. Windows is looking for a BHO that isn't there

Incidentally if DAD is on AVG 7 you might consider moving him to AVAST instead of AVG 8
AVG 8 requires a computer with lots of resources to be effective (being charitable)
If you do remove AVG then be sure to run their new "uninstaller"

WHat does dad have for a system?
using IE does he have spywareblaster installed?
a Hosts file?
any preventive anti malware app?
