During Avast update ( auto or manual .... have tried both  !! ) I recieve the message " Avast caused an error in <unknown> Avast will now close " . This message appears after download and almost complete install of update files . I recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows ME due to possibly .... guess what , a virus  >:( ( I know !! but this was before I installed Avast ) . Any ideas ??  ???

What version of avast are you using, 4.8.1229 is the latest (you say you have the latest but didn't confirm the version) ?

What other security software do you have installed ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
If that doesn't work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.
Windows 10 Home 64bit/ Acer Aspire F15/ Intel Core i5 7200U 2.5GHz, 8GB DDR4 memory, 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD/ avast! free 24.3.6108 (build 24.3.8975.762) UI 1.0.801/ Firefox, uBlock Origin, uMatrix/ MailWasher Pro/ Avast! Mobile Security

Do you have any other antivirus installed?
Is your computer clean? Can you check with one of the on-line scanners?
Kaspersky (very good detection rates)
ESET NOD32
Trendmicro housecall
F-Secure
BitDefender (free removal of the malware)
