avast wont close

If you would have chosen an antivirus / antimalware program that works better than avast after your format, you'd be all set  But now your screwed 

I posted this because after I tried avast free on several computers, we suffered ill effects.

It dont seem like anyone here likes me much, so I might as well post the real facts about my findings with avast, and it's forum....

What is your operating system ?

avast is designed as a resident on-access antivirus, I take it that you have tried the Stop On-Access Protection (right click the avast 'a' icon), that however would leave you vulnerable if playing on-line games. This doesn't shutdown the services, but it would stop all scanning if it is a resources thing that you are concerned with ?

avast 4.8 includes a self-defence module to protect it against attack, so you would need to disable that to stop any services (program settings, troubleshooting, disable avast! self-defence module.

What is it exactly that you are trying to achieve ?

The facts in your case might well be correct, however I would say yours is the exception rather than the rule. I don't see how you come to the conclusion that no one here likes you, they might disagree with a point you may be making if that differs from their experience or viewpoint, but that doesn't imply they don't like you.

If those are your feelings about avast and the forums, I don't understand why you are still here, let us get on and try to help those seeking help.

Thanks for at least replying to something I posted David, as you say, it's probably best that I leave you folks be, here in your little world, but when you all wake up to what's going on in the real world, then and only then will you see where i'm coming from.

Noything I posted here was aimed at you Bob, as I feel like your were a very nice guy, and are one of the few here that has some concept of what's going on in the real world 

Then again, while these boys talk you into each and every new idea out there to download and test on your computers, I set and wonder........

im play css halo and starcraft and dont need avast protection however my computer is not 5- 10 years old its dell xp with 254 of ram
i recently reformated from a my old comp and on my old i close avast completey through task manager now i am unable to terminate avast
i really like avast as my anti viruse program out of many i have used but when im playing some of my games i need to resources avast uses to operate
i need those resources to play with out real issues
and i rather not have disable avast startup to get thse resources
css is really what i want to play but im borderline to lowest to requirements
and avast lowers me so i have probelms

I seem to recall - yesterday only - posting in support of you. 

I will have to note that my experience is different from yours.  None of the folks I support (including me) have experienced a virus infection in the 4 years we have been using the avast Home version. I do not think that is being brainwashed - I think it is being honest.

I am sorry that you have apparently had to conceal your true feelings - that is always a tough place to be.  I hope that you will feel more content and able to be more open in whatever new place you choose.

sorry that your post got hijacked by an emotional discussion not really relevant to your problem.

David has given you the basic options but you need to understand that there is no feature in avast that will totally unload and remove all of avast's components from your system in real time.  Your efforts to do so will be resisted by the avast self-protection feature designed to prevent malware from terminating the protection of avast. 

As David has advised you - if you are online and you terminate all of avast's providers then you expose yourself to greater risk.  If you are (really) not online and playing against your computer only then you can safely stop all on-access protection while you are playing but you would need to re-start the protection before going online again.  If you are using an "always on" broadband connection then you are never offline - you must decide the risk vs benefit you want to take.

If you can afford it then an investment in more memory would see great improvements in the responsiveness for an XP system.  I remember the dramatic improvement in my old XP system when I took it from 256M to 512M (the max for that Dell machine).

As Alan mention, 256M ram is quite low for today's computing needs as well as for running XP. The minimum should be at least 512M and 1gig would be much better but you can not go that high with your computer.

I, too, am unhappy that you are disappointed with avast and this forum. Truthfully, I never noticed anyone giving you a hard time nor did I feel anyone really disliked you. There have been many times that someone on this forum (as well as other forums I post on) have disagreed with me. I did not take it badly because we all have different opinions, views, and levels of experience. Best of all, I learned from those disagreements because I chose to do so. Learning from such things is the best path to follow. Please do not be dismayed. Instead, stick around and be enlightened  with what others know as well as enlighten others with what you know. That way, we all benefit.

I can only give you 2 suggestions:
1. Increase your memory. You should be using at minimum at least 1 gig.
2. Pause both Web Shield and Standard Shield while your playing your games.

Remember that once disabled, you're no longer protected.  :'(

As others have mentioned a RAM upgrade is highly advisable, not only will you not have to completely disable avast to play the game, but it will improve the game speed and general overall computer performance as you won't be continually swapping out what is in RAM to HDD.
