Does Avast protect 2nd computer on the network

I am sorry to take up space for this question, but.....   I have used the search feature on the forum, and can't really answer this question to my satisfaction in the manual.  I did read the thread on changing the Services from Local to Network, but didn't quite understand how to do it or if I should with my configuration.
I have a windows 98SE computer networked to my main computer via a cable.  I have Avast on my main computer (XP SP2)and access the internet on my 98 computer through my modem on the main computer.  Does Avast check the info going through my modem to my 98 computer, or is my 98 computer vulnerable to virus attacks.  The old computer has Norton AV 2001 without updates as my subscription services ran out a long time ago.  Everything works great now, but I am afraid to get rid of NAV on the old machine and install Avast as there seem to be so many problems.  All we do on the 98 computer is surf the web. (no email).

Since you are a home user, you can install Avast on both systems with the same key.
Make sure NAV is completely removed before doing so.

I assume that means I must uninstall NAV on the second machine.  I do have that link but was trying to avoid using it.  The link says to use Rnav2003.exe removal tool only if the add/remove windows program doesn't work.  I do have other Symantec programs on that machine.  I wonder if I should remove them too, or if that would just cause more problems.  On my XP SP2 machine, just removing the NAV worked great, but who knows on this older machine.

Just removing NAV shouldn't bring problems to the other applications.
Age of the system is no issue at all.

I do have other Symantec programs on that machine. 

No problems like Eddy said. Just remove NAV and keep the others.
You don't have to remove LiveUpdate either. 
Which version of Symantec products do you have? 2003, 2004?

My newer machine has Systemworks 2003 and I just uninstalled NAV from it.

Update.  I just uninstalled NAV 2001, installed Avast.  Everything seems to be working-email, internet-and updates.  Just scanning system now.

Tech I have 2000 and 2001 versions on the old machine.  I never updated them.

I've used them. No uninstallations troubles. After that I've changed to AVG and then avast! 

My newer machine has Systemworks 2003 and I just uninstalled NAV from it.

This is the worst of them. You need to donwload the standalone application called RNAV2003.exe from Symantec site and run it.

Can you post the contents of these Windows Registry keys in your system?

I haven't even tried to uninstall Systemworks.  It doesn't seem to be hurting anything.
I don't even know where to find the registry keys you mentioned unless you want me to use Start/Run/regedit, and that scares me a bit because of all the hype about changing things.
I will bookmark your info on what to do if I do want to get rid of Norton System Works.
My 98SE machine is working great and I was amazed at all the malware, spyware etc that was found running  Avast, Adaware and Spybot. 
BTW I can't imagine you were ever a beginner!!!!!

Everyone was a beginner some time. I discovered this forum because a Norton problem. I was nicely answered by Kubecj and Vlk. They are due to the fact I'm here until now
