Rescue disc and boot scanning
« on: October 05, 2008, 07:15:43 AM »
I "used" to use AVG :) a couple few years ago.
Maybe I should note I do like AVG, but I researched a bit and decided since
AVG was the only one I have ever used, I should try something else,
needless to say I Avast came into my life and I haven't really looked back,
Although I do keep an eye on what people are saying about Avast adn AVG over at CNET.
Okay sorry here's the question.
AVG had a "Should a virus create serious system problems, AVG creates a rescue disk to scan your computer in MS-DOS mode"
Does AVast have such a thing ?
on a floppy and a CD.
I created this disk, and it worked it scanned my hard drive completely,
even though it wouldn't boot, it even scanned the second partition and all of
it's files, even though the partition table info had been destroyed
and could not be seen in windows dos mode to check the partitons and all that
IN WINDOWS 98SE BTW.

Does AVast have such a thing ?
Similar (and most of the times, better) if you were using Windows XP/Vista.
There you can schedule a boot-time scanning:
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
But you're with 98  :-[

the partition table info had been destroyed
I don't think this will be done by the AVG scanner (I hope not...) but if the virus did this, it will be very difficult to recover.

Other possibility is Avira Rescue CD. Download also the latest virus definitions (called security updates there).

I suggest you boot in DOS mode and run scandisk (or chkdsk, I don't remember exactly how is it called in Windows 98).

Correct me if Im wrong,
So it sounds like no AVAST does not have this make a rescue disk feature ?

Now remembering this took place years ago, and now I want to hook the "bad"
Drive up as a Slave and hopefully see if I can burn the files on a CD,
Which is why it's on Windows98SE, for that computer.
I did make this AVG rescue disk, infact 2, 1 on a floppy and 1 on a cd, those
were choices AVG Free gave me.
I used the AVG Floppy I made and it found and cleaned or deleted whatever it
found, it's been so long I can't tell you what it was.
I watched it as it scanned, and it scanned every area of both partitions,
inlcuding the secondary partition and files that when I used my Windows 98 Boot disk to check the partitions didn't show, it could only see the primary partition,
So the MBR partition table information was missing, But ofcourse the files are
still there, the only option Windows boot disk would do is create a new
partition, and I believe IF I did that I would lose the files, since ofcourse it has to be formatted before you can use it etc.
Infact I think that if I boot the Hard drive it will write something to the mbr Partition Table, then I might lose all the files,
IF ONLY I could partition it exactly the same and it would take place, with out
having to format, or create a partition with the remaining with out having to format or something along those lines.
Even though I think the hard dirve will boot to the C: Partition, I think the D:
Partition will be lost, probably definitely inaccessable.
I probably need a good program that would read and extract
the files on a inaccessable hard drive.
But I have no idea, I am ready to try and hook it up as a slave, but I am leary, because of the partition Table. The D: Partition is where all the files are
I want to get it was the storage drive so to speak.
Hoping that if somethign went wrong I could format the C: drive,
reinstall and be good to go...Bzzzzz Wrong answer. :)

No it does not generate these disks. It uses two other technologies: BART CD (payed) and boot time scanning (for XP/Vista for free).

It's worth noting that AVG 7.X has rescue disc capability only for 98SE/ME. XP/Vista is not supported.

It won't suit everyone but up 'till recently I've  made all desktops dual-boot, XP (FAT32 only) and 9X on separate disks (Hard disks are so riduculously cheap and redundant ones usually free!). Very handy in all sorts of situations.
Lately I've started keeping an updated SATA XP emergency recovery hard disk for Vista/SATA desktops.

It was some sort of (640kb) problem. I think that's the right numbers.
BTW, You hope what would not be done byAVG scanner ?.
