uninstall previous AV.
« on: October 10, 2008, 12:29:08 PM »
I have installed the AVAST Free 4 Home recently and I think I have found a way to uninstall AVG remants.    Now do I need to deactivate AVAST in any way before downloading the AVG uninstaller???      OS isXP, SP3 and Defender.

You don't need to deactivate avast to download or run the avg uninstall tool.

You should first have used the add remove programs to remove avg, before installing avast. If you didn't do it that way you may need to reinstall avast after you have run the avg uninstall tool and rebooted. But check first to see if avast is running as it should you may not need to reinstall.

Where you experiencing any problems with avast that sent you in search of the avg uninstall tool (or what made you go looking) ?

I presume this is the tool you are talking about - AVG Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Hi DavidR,

I was advised to use the Avg uninstaller but I couldn't find the correct site I found alot of other things that took time and because I didn't have any av installed I felt it should be sooner rather than later.

Avast appears to be OK.    How do I tell if its a 64bit Windows version?

If you don't know then it is pretty certain you are using a windows 32bit OS as it is a very concious decision to go to a 64bit OS and you would know.
