Updating Difficulties
« on: October 19, 2008, 06:50:50 PM »
Help please!  I'm using Avast Home Edition 4.8, and can't get it to update the virus database.

I'm running Windows XP, with only the Windows Firewall.  I have used McAfee in the past, but have run the proper removal procedures several times to ensure that there are no vestiges remaining.

I've also uninstalled Avast and reinstalled, to no avail.  I can't figure out whether the difficulty is with Avast being unable to access the update servers, or with something else.  Automatic update does not seem to work, and when I try to force a manual update, the message, "Error: Cannot connect to server" repeatedly appears; the update utility finally gives up after several rounds of this and displays an error message listing multiple possible reasons for the error (not connected to internet, firewall blocking, update server down, etc.).

Please help!!  I'm going to post the recent program log below as a hopeful aid to the diagnosis.

Many thanks.

First question that comes to mind is "how long have you been trying to update Avast! ?

Second thing you might try is to remove permissions for Avast! from your firewall and try again thus forcing the firewall to ask for permission again...  ???

I'm sure one of the "Avast! Guru's" will come up with other things to try...  :)

Not sure what tools you used if only windows add remove programs, check these:

McAfee has an uninstall tool that you could run to ensure any possible remnants are removed.

2007 version - http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Re what ProgrammerGuy said - Does it allow  avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Also does this happen only shortly after boot ?
