I've often said that virus protection programs are worse than the viruses. So my friend told me to try avast. Avast is the clear winner. It wakes me up in the middle of the night to tell me my "virus database has been updated". This is exactly the stuff I want to be protected against!! I don't always remember to turn down the volume after cranking my iTunes, so when the avast voice comes on in the middle of the night, he wakes the whole family.
Also, everytime I boot, avast tells me that Norton or Symantic is running, and it gives me some cryptic message. I forget what it is, but it gives me the impression that avast is not going to do its job unless I resolve the issue. Any thoughts?
I was able to manually start a scan, and it moved about 20 viruses/malware to the chest. I was hoping this would improve the performance of my system, but it hasn't. It seems that if I leave my computer on for more than 24 hours, I get a Windows message about the virtual memory being low. Then every simple thing I do, even moving the mouse causes my hard drive to perform a 5 minute drum solo. It didn't used to do this until a few weeks ago. Any thoughts?
Thanks!!!
p.s. I'm running XP on a 4-year old HP.
