make the voice go away
« on: November 01, 2008, 03:29:48 AM »
I've often said that virus protection programs are worse than the viruses.  So my friend told me to try avast.  Avast is the clear winner.  It wakes me up in the middle of the night to tell me my "virus database has been updated".  This is exactly the stuff I want to be protected against!!  I don't always remember to turn down the volume after cranking my iTunes, so when the avast voice comes on in the middle of the night, he wakes the whole family.

Also, everytime I boot, avast tells me that Norton or Symantic is running, and it gives me some cryptic message.  I forget what it is, but it gives me the impression that avast is not going to do its job unless I resolve the issue.  Any thoughts?

I was able to manually start a scan, and it moved about 20 viruses/malware to the chest.  I was hoping this would improve the performance of my system, but it hasn't.  It seems that if I leave my computer on for more than 24 hours, I get a Windows message about the virtual memory being low.  Then every simple thing I do, even moving the mouse causes my hard drive to perform a 5 minute drum solo.  It didn't used to do this until a few weeks ago.  Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!

p.s. I'm running XP on a 4-year old HP.

Hi...

In that case, you might want to disable "avast sounds" before the real time scanner finds a virus. ::) There is an option for this in the drop-down menu when you bring up the main program window, I believe under "settings."

Do you remember what the "cryptic message" said? Also, do you have a Norton product still installed? If not, how did you uninstall it?

It's possible that your system is still infected in some way. I recommend a regimen created by Tech, a fellow member of this forum. Go to this thread and read the last post...

Hope this helps...

Thanks!

I don't see any menu. I launch avast by:

Start > All Programs > avast! antivirus > avast! antivirus.

I just see this console come up that looks kinda like a car stereo, but it has no menus.  I already searched through it for a "sound" option and found none.

Hi...

To get to the drop down menu there should be a button on the upper left hand corner of the main window. Then choose "settings" and then "sound(s)."  :)

Best Regards...

You'll need to remove Symantec before avast! works properly.

1) Uninstall avast! from Add/Remove Programs and reboot,
2) Run the Symantec removal tool and reboot,
3) Reinstall avast!

Start > All Programs > avast! antivirus > avast! antivirus.

Right click on the avast! ball in the notification area: you'll see a settings option. Open the Settings menu and select Sounds: you'll be able to disable the voices from there.

All roads lead to Damascus.

Isn't that the expression?

Hi...

Well, the Apostle Paul might have been on one of them (near Damascus) when he met the Lord. (Acts 9:1-31) :)

But I think you're referring to Rome. ;)

I never before heard the composite of:

"on the road to Damascus"

and

"all roads lead to Rome"

but FWF may well have coined a new one.

I don't think I'm the first to use it: it seems to be literally true, if not in the Old Testament:

In the world of the Old Testament it may fairly have been said, "All roads lead to Damascus."

But I think it may have been used to allege Syrian involvement in acts of terrorism, and thus become mixed up in my mind with 'All roads lead to Rome'.

I take no responsibility for my current president's (and his administration's thankfully short remaining tenure) tendency to abuse the English language and its customs.
