My computer is aching for an update but as far as I can see one hasn't been done for well over a month.  Am I missing something?

Can you do a manual update? What happens?
Have you checked avast! settings to make sure you have automatic updates enabled?
Is Windows warning about avast! being out of date? Is the avast! ball greyed out?

Well you could start with the missing information, sorry couldn't help my self ;D

What are your settings in the avast Program Settings (right click the avast 'a' icon), Update (Basic) for the Program and Virus Database ?
See image for the default settings.

Are you getting any errors or warnings displayed ?
Check the avast! Log Viewer (right click the avast 'a' icon or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe), Warning or Error section.
