So when you try a right click on the avast icon, Updating, iAVS Update, nothing at all happens ?

Are there no error messages, etc. if sp what are they ?

What is your Firewall ?

The icon just rotates once and stops, i dont get any popup showing any error or other message
Zonealarm F/W and i have tried to update avast after switching off the F/W also.
I also checked up the log files but haven't found any thing odd.

Another thing, i yesterday detected that my system has got a virus (not major one i believe)
It just created an autorun.inf and another executable xih9.cmd
And avast didnot detect it probably because its definition i think was released on 4th and mine is updated only till 2nd.
Could it be that this virus might have done something.

Hi,
can you access control panel Add/remove programs - avast! Antivirus, and select Update here?

If no dialog for avast appears, try the advice mentioned here:

Hello, I'm having a similar problem with the updating - started two days ago.  Up until then, I've had the rotating globe in the system tray lower right.  It usually rotates and shows 6 items running.  Now, the icon is not there and no indication that it is working and no update announcement when I open windows up.

The fact that the icon isn't there indicates a different problem over and above any updating problem.

What Operating System are you using ?
Are you getting any errors displayed or in the log - Check the avast! Log Viewer (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashLogV.exe), Warning (or Error) section, this contains information on all warnings/errors.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What other security programs do you have installed ?

As you can see there are things we need to know because of the difference in your problem.

I am running Windows XP, SP2.  The Ashlog shown no problems (Empty).  As far as I know, I have NOT loaded any other AntiVirus software.  I was thinking of reloading the Setupeng.  I have a current Licensce Key and probably would have to re-enter that afterword.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that doesn't work try a clean reinstall, see below.

It would probably be best to first Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can't do that start from the next step), reboot.
2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot.  If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.
3. install the latest version, reboot.

I have been having the same problem.  No automatic updates, and can't force an update.  Is this a server problem?  If so, when will it be fixed?

What errors/warnings were displayed when that happened ?

@ emilymullen
In this topic there are a number of questions asked of the other posters, so if you can also answer those to give an idea what the problem might be ?

Please, post the last 300-350 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log
