Problem with new version of avast! Antivirus
« on: November 14, 2008, 11:06:50 PM »
Avast was working fine until the new version installed a couple of days ago. Now the blue ball by the clock gets the red circle with the line across it. I have all the Windows updates for my Windows XP computer and I have read and followed the method to repair this problem by going to "Services" and making sure the "avast! Antivirus" is set to "Automatic" and then set it to "Start". I then reboot and it appears to work for a while then reverts back to the blue ball with the circle and red line at some point. I have also done the uninstall and reinstall and also the repair. Nothing fixes this. Note that I also have SP3 installed and IE7. Any help would be appreciated. TIA.....Lonnie

I have changed the value of "LateServiceStart" to "1" in avast4.ini and it is also set that way in program settings. It started ok with a blue ball but now, again, it has again changed the blue ball to the circle with the line thru it.

Hi....

While I don't know why this has happened specifically, you can try performing a repair installation and then try manually updating avast. Just go to the Control Panel, click on "Add/Remove Programs," and then avast. When the menu options appear on the left (in the window that appears after clicking on avast,) scroll down to the, I believe, last option, "Repair."

If the problem isn't solved after performing the repair, you can try uninstalling avast with this tool...

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Then download and reinstall avast from scratch...

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you didn't save your registration key (e-mail,) you can apply for a new one here...

Hope this helps.

Best Regards...

Thank you for replying. I have done all of your suggestions and I believe the uninstall tool you suggested is just what I needed. Just finished the install a couple of minutes ago and so far it is working well. I'll keep my eye on it for a few days just to make sure though. Again, thanks a bunch.....Lonnie
