Avast is not working properly for me. I have used it before on my other computers, but never before on Vista. I am using 64-Bit business edition.
I have no On-Access protection. Hovering my mouse over the a-ball in the system tray : "avast! On Access Scanner: 0 provider(s) total, 0 running"
When clicking the a-ball I get this error :

I installed it using the full installation.
Changing my protection from disabled to high does nothing.

I get the same error. Been using 32 bit for year+. After program and def updates 11-14-08
the error started. Only way I can stop it from happening in a few minutes is not use ANY
Shields/Providors except Standard Shield. Check this article though it did not help me.

We will need more information to be able to help you:
- What avast! version and VPS file (virus database) number?
- Do you use a firewall? Which one?
- Do you have any other antivirus installed in your system?  Did you have in the past?
- Any other security programs that could interfere?

AArdvark posted this when I had the same problem and it fixed mine....

Hi....

While I don't know why this has happened specifically, you can try performing a repair installation and then try manually updating avast. Just go to the Control Panel, click on "Add/Remove Programs," and then avast. When the menu options appear on the left (in the window that appears after clicking on avast,) scroll down to the, I believe, last option, "Repair."

If the problem isn't solved after performing the repair, you can try uninstalling avast with this tool...

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Then download and reinstall avast from scratch...

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

If you didn't save your registration key (e-mail,) you can apply for a new one here...

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

Hope this helps.

Best Regards...

Unfortunately I have tried 5 times to re-install Avast and the error comes back. Used
the Clean utility too.  :(

I've been having EXACTLY the same problem for 3 days now!

I've tried just about everything, the full avast reinstall, using the aswclear.exe to remove avast, even removing all 'avast' registry entries before reinstalling. I can run avast! and perform a system scan (never returns anything), i just cant use the on-access protection. only ashdisp.exe and aswupdsv.exe are listed as running processes.

Avast! 4.8.1282
VPS 081117-0 (compiled 11/17/2008)
I use the standard windows firewall, along with the firewall built into my modem-router
I am not using any other permanent security tool, although i have tried out a few other scanners recently.

I have had several very odd issues recently including:
my paging file seems to be resetting itself every time i restart
I cannot update windows from the microsoft website.
I was seeing very strange folder permissions for my entire hard drive

I've run microsofts Windows Malicious Tool Remover, updated avast, run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and tried many other things. Either this is a nasty virus, or i'm suffering from a very corrupt windows installation all of a sudden.

please help!

Hi All,

I came across this post a couple of days ago as i was having the same problem, but i have the latest version of avast! installed.

Avast! version: 4.8.1296
VPS version: 090101-0

I tried everything in this forum, including re-installing avast, but nothing worked

This is the solution that worked for me.

1. Run Spybot S&D and remove all spyware / malware etc... (I don't think this had anything to do with the solution , but put this in for fullness)
2. Right Click on avast system tray icon. Click Program Settings and goto the Troubleshooting section. Check the box (Delay loading of avast! services after other system services) and click the OK button.
3. Restart PC

I haven't had any problems since then.

Hope this helps.

Regards

James

2. Right Click on avast system tray icon. Click Program Settings and goto the Troubleshooting section. Check the box (Delay loading of avast! services after other system services) and click the OK button.
This is there exactly to prevent RPC errors.
