Unable to install
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:45:29 PM »
New to this forum so I will start with a hello to all.
I just purchased the new Avast  and also the disk to install. I go to install on my lap top( Toshiba A-65 Satellite with xp home) and it will not install fully. It says there is a concern with the skin and will not install. The trail version also dose the same, It tells me from avast window on start up "You have upgraded your operating system. Current installation of avast cannot run on this operating system. The avast antivirus system needs to be installed." I have tyred to delete the trail version in my controll panel but there is no record of this program. Tyred to go to tech help and the screen says done but is all white like they are down, Any help and thanks in advance,

From where ???

Do you have any other AntiVirus programs installed on your computer?
If you've removed any, how was it done.

No other virus guard is on this laptop. The one that was on it was removed from Add or delete programs, all but the trial version of avast. I bought the program and disk through this site. it it from Portland Or. I have loaded this program on my home PC and it is OK and has also updated 1 time already. How do I go about getting the trail version off my laptop since it dose not show in Add or remove programs?

There should not have been a trial version of Avast on your computer (unless you put it there yourself) in addition to the AV you removed. That's quite suspicious.
One thing at a time:
What was the AV that you removed? Norton? Needs further removal.
Any idea how this "trial Avast from Portland Or" got there? Any other info about this, please?

Rechecked for previous AV and none was found or is now in sec. files. The free av from Avast was down loaded but never took. There should be no reason that this does not work on this lap top with this operating system that I know of.

Uh, yeah, racecar, what you are posting doesn't answer the questions.
If you wouldn't mind.

From where did you purchase avast?

From what site?

What was the former antivirus?

Have been gone for a couple of days so to answer the question I got the free trial version from avast web site. I have installed it on this PC I am using now. The one that it will not load to is my lap top, It is a Toshiba a-65 sattellight and as far as all the searches I have done there is no av installed on this laptop. I purchased the disk for avast at the start of this month and bought it through this web site. I do not know why it will not load in my PC, all it tells me is that it cannot run due to my opperating system which is windows xp. I am not real strong with computers so any help or ways to check for what you all need to know will help. Thank you.

When you say in your post above,

it's the meaning of the text that I've bolded that I can't work out.
You seem to be saying three things: 1 -There has never been an AV on the laptop,
2 -There was an AV but that was removed through the control panel
3 -There was another I removed but the trial version of Avast is still there. But not updating.
So I'm having trouble working out how to help.
The brand of the "other" AV that may/may not have been installed is important, the solution might depend on it.

I'm just going to offer you a generic solution that might work. Please be methodical.
-Download the Norton removal Tool: http://majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html
-Download the Avast uninstall utility: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html
-Download the Avira registry cleaner, no. 6 here: http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html
Save these to your desktop.
-Disconnect from the net. If applicable, uninstall all and any AV from the control panel "add/remove programs". (And if this happened, reboot.)
-Run the Norton Removal tool. Reboot into safe mode.
-Run the Avast uninstall utility. Reboot into normal mode.
-Run the Avira registry cleaner. Reboot if prompted.
-Try re-installing Avast from the disk you purchased. (If I've read you correctly, the content of this disk has been successfully installed on another system, has it not? If not, maybe the disk is suspect.)
-If this works, reconnect to the net, get updates, go, post back.
Good luck.

Thanks for the help. Norton is wanting a price for there program and at this time I am unemployed so I will not be able to install it at this time. I have printed out your post and will try when I get an income again. I do have avast in my 2 other home PC and like it a lot and also the help I have received on this site. Again thanks to all .

As Bob says. The removal utility from Norton is a free download, no strings attached. Always download it just before use; the version changes from time to time.
Avast Home is, of course, free.
Now we know it's Norton that was installed, that's the tool to use, I see no need to use the Avira Registry cleaner as well.
None of this will cost a cent. You're good to go.
Let us know how you went.
