Avast 1290 update to 4.8 home stopped Web Shield

Really new to Avast antivirus. Installed about three weeks ago. Had six providers running on Win XP Pro, SP2 (don't use Outlook). After 1290 update, Web Shield says it is waiting for a subsystem to start when I am online. Slow dialup connection. Can't get Web Shield to
turn on. any suggestions?

Please go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services.

What is the status of the "avast! Web Scanner" service? Can it be started?
