I tried to uninstall the program and reinstall and it seemed to go ok (although  the 'add or remove' didn't work). I installed the program to a different location; it seems to work when I click on the icon on the screen - - but, after a bootup, there's no spinning ball or the other ball at the bottom of the screen. In addition, a window of a directory always appears for some reason.

I guess I'll try some registry cleaners and maybe see if I can find an older version of the software. Hopefully, I won't have to go for another virus program.

Get the feeling all the problems are with Sygate and not Avast since it's their inability to pick up the program update. Anybody check out their forum?

To all,

Your problem lies in Sygate not Avast.  For some reason, something in the update confuses Sygate and it will not  "see" or truly "recognize" Avast as the program wishing connecton and therefore does not match it to a "permission" which you have given it.

Reinstalling Sygate corrects the problem.
Why does reinstalling Avast work then?  Well, when you reinstall Avast, it gives Sygate another chance to "recognize" the program which it usually does.

A type of corruption occurs within Sygate causing the Problem. I have only had this happen ONCE in my use of Avast in my Win98 machine, and never with my WinME or WinXP using Pro.

It is just one of those things that happens lacking a more technical explanation.

I use ZoneAlarm   for my firewall and don't have any problem.   You might consider changing your firewall. ;D

I am having trouble since the update too. Using Win98-SE.

I've reinstalled my system twice and each time after installing the new version of Avast4Home (4.1.389) My system is extremely buggy.

For example:

- I cannot change my video resolutions, the computer locks up.
- Various program just lockup.
- Internet Explorer locks the system up on some pages. (Windows update)
- Shutting down Windows no longer works, it locks and I have to hit the power. Every time I turn it back on, it does a system scan to make sure all is well.

I have been a user of Avast for over a year and have recommended it to many friends and customers. But if this problem is not identified and corrected, I will remove Avast from my "Recommended Software" website and find a new provider.

Any answers would be appreciated here guys.

Thanks in advance,

Here's some further information.

When I try to change my video settings I get a system lockup with an error window refering to an error in RUNDLL.DLL ?  Requires a reboot and the video size and resolution are unchanged.

When I get any other error messages they are primarily involving DDHELP.EXE.

Hope it helps.

I am in the middle of it right now and it is sitting there with the splash screen saying it is shutting down.......

Well, I never had a problem with the shutdown before this all began.  I'd hate to have to go to AVG, I really preferred Avast.

I've reinstalled 2 times with Win98se the past two days. And both times, though I only noticed the second time exactly, that the problems start after I install Avast 4.1.389.

I really hope someone at Avast can figure out why this happening, or offer some solutions.

WinME is just too buggy for me.

This version works for me now that I've removed the Sygate Firewall. I'm just using a replacement now and hope that I can reinstall it in the future.

Hi,
My machine OS is Windows Me and I have the latest free version of Sygate as well. Last week I was notified about the Avast update and I did it.

I did not find any problem with Sygate. The problem I found was that the Shutdown problem. I have been using Avast for a few months and was very happy with it even recommending to friends and colleagues. Now whenever I do the shutdown the Blue screen comes up saying some kind of error and I can't do the shutdown no matter what trick. The Ctrl-Alt-Del do not work either. The message keep popping up. Have to press the Reset button to re-start the machine.

I found by disabling Avast, (clicking on Stop On-Access Protection and Exit) I am able to do the Shutdown normally. However I do not think this is a normal procedure, so is there any way or any setting I could change so I could perform a normal shutdown on my machine?

I appreciate any information/suggestion on this matter.

Thanks

I found a way to stop Sygate from asking for access to the net every time after updating to new version of Avast....I found removing all entries for programs to access the net worked for me...If you just delete the Avast ones and then let it redetect it doesn't work.  Clear them all out and then Avast will work properly.  It worked for me anyway.  Remove them all then do a reboot and then see if the problem ceases after you do initial acceptance of Avast to access the net for updates.
