"generic host process for win 32 services"
I began receiving this notification shortly after I had installed the previous "new" version of Avast home edition download.
I'm not saying the download caused it but it began occuring shortly afterward.

I have run numerous boot scans and have turned off system restore (OS win xp sp2) and avast has caught the win 32 trojan in network systems and says it, first time, deleted it, second & third time moved it to chest.
But I am still getting the error message and knocked offline and have to reboot the computer as nothing will work.
Then I receive that notice from windows saying it shut down to protect the computer.

Help..what can I do to correct this situation and get my computer running correctly again?

Thank you.

Can we discover which program is causing the error (generating the message)?
Maybe you should scan with MBAM and SuperAntispyware to be sure you`re clean...

Hi,
 Thank you for your reply.
I have scanned with malwarebytes and superantispyware.
SASW didn't find anything. Malwarebytes did and removed it.
Avast also found another(or same) trojan and moved it to chest.
I also downloaded a patch fix from MS but it didn't help at all.

During the processes I had system restore turned off. Rebooted after each scan.

the first notice is a "svchost.exe application error.
Then after rebotting I get the message pop up that windows shut it down to protect the compuer from generic host system process for win 32 services"

by the way, I'm sorry if I can't reply sooner but I keep getting knocked offline.

Hi Dana...

If you can, please try running an online scan here...

http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

Also, what are the results of using the following rootkit scanners...

F-Secure's Blacklight...

http://www.f-secure.com/security_center/

(scroll down to "downloads.")

Trend Micro Rootkit-Buster...

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/rbuster.asp

Do you have a legitimate copy of Windows XP on CD or a restore partition on your hard drive?

Best Regards...

"generic host process for win 32 services", it is exactly that. A generic HOST that allows/helps other things to run.
First you need to find out what is using the host process.

You can use Process explorer and/or Processmonitor to find out
