Connection to internet not working after install

I removed norton 360 free trial from my computer and downloaded AVAST in its place. It still says I have an excellent connection to the internet yet when I open firefox it immediately says "page load error". I tried uninstalling AVAST, then using the internet, and it worked perfectly. Reinstalled AVAST, same problem. Is there a certain way to configure it so that it allows me to access the internet? Please help!

Norton does not like any other anti virus application on your system and will go to great lengths to prevent you installing another anti virus application.

Download Norton Removal Tool

Then run it and have it remove Norton then reboot then install avast! again. 

You will find lots of friendly help here getting avast! running.

In addition to that YoKenny mentioned in his post, you might also run something like CCleaner after uninstalling Norton and all its components to insure that every last 'hook' that Norton has put in is gone...
