is it enough to repair or do i need to reinstall after removing zonealarm?

hi
i wanted to use avast and zonealarm together, but both programs tell me there are problems
avast said it would change something and it did - i guess - but the problems didnt go away
i uninstalled zonealarm and wont be using it anymore

the change in avast: will the program be restored to fully normal if i repair it, or do i need to reinstall the program?

You must be referring the "privacy blocking" feature in ZA Pro and transparent proxy mode in WebShield. When ZA is not installed, WebShield will work in transparent mode automatically.

i am referring to the free ZA firewall - or at least that is what i thought i downloaded from pcworld.com
do you know of any compatibility issues between AZ free and the free avast?

You should answer No the the compatibility question then if you have the ZA free version without the ZA Privacy function. This won't disable the transparent function of the web shield and all will work as it should.

If the question appears and you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off webshield transparent mode proxy.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line or, if you want to keep this line, set it to 0. Save the edited avast4.ini file.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast comptability dialog box the transparent mode proxy in webshield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. To manually configure your browser watch instructional video. In this case, the value ZoneAlarmCompatibility=1 should be at avast4.ini file.
