Strange behavior
« on: April 23, 2004, 10:40:00 PM »
Hi!

I use Avast 4.1 Home Edition (4.1.389 and 0417-3) under WinXP Pro.
During playing around with the Eicar test virus at http://www.eicar.org/anti_virus_test_file.htm I recognized some strange behaviour:

I downloaded the Eicar test virus icar.com with IE 6.
After the download completed, I clicked on "Open" to run the program. Avast alerts me that a virus has been found.
After that I did a right-click on the file (in the IE) and choosed "Save as..". The dialog appeared, I saved the file on my local harddrive and NOTHING happened! No alert! Then I scanned the directory in which I saved the file. During the scan avast alerts me that a Virus has been found. Now I started the file from the harddisc and avast alerts me again.

It seems that avast is only scanning the files when they are executed but not at download time. Is it a bug or isn't avast configured correctly? I didn't change anything at the configuration on avast so all should be at default value.

Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks in advance.

make sure the extensions list has .COM files included

yup...this should be the case...avast by default only scans file upon opening/executing...that's why avast does not alert you when the file is being downloaded to your hard disk... :)

you can of course configure your resident shield to detect virus in files upon downloading them....see this thread for more info.. ;)
