I'm almost sure it's an Internet Explorer trouble or firewall...
But you said that only use XP internal firewall and it was disabled.
Can you use IE without problems?

How do you connect to the Internet? Aren't you using a proxy server?
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving's not for you.

Please, run the commandline, cd to avast directory and run program ashbug.exe with /setuplog parameter. Write short description of problems you have (or put there link to this thread) & send the report.

We'll check the logs and get back to you.

But it still seems as proxy/firewall misconfiguration.

Hey all I have EXACTLY the same problem
I also notice some corruption in web pages as well - through any browser (IE, netscape and opera) and this style of download doesn't work anywhere.
I have the SAME configuration - and have tried a few things to fix this:
install xp-pro sp1
reinstall (refresh) of xp-pro source
re-created with zonealarm disabled, updated etc
udated java (several versions)
updated winsock and reset settings
reinstalled browsers
removed xp-pro firewall some time ago
run every virus/trojan fixer I could trust (stinger etc)
searched and searched the internet......

I even asked the google people (on the web page error) and they couldn't spot anything.
This must be some sort of config or corruption error and its driving me spare....

I don't get too sensible a response from the ashbug programme.

Please help!

You say countless adds popping up. Sounds like you have some spyware attatched to your IE, and may be messing stuff up. I would suggest running a spy removal program. Heres a free version you can download and run.

Good luck. And make sure your updates are to spec. A new patch has just been released by microsoft. Some nasty worms going around.

Peace,

If you have not done so, turn of Windows Messenger Service (not an IM program) as the bad guys have learnt to send pop-ups through this service.

Hello,
I had the same problem with spybot search&destroy. It wouldn't let me update the definitions dats. I also noticed that certain websites that contain info about spyware were blocked.
This was my solution for it: (XP professional)
go to Windows/system32/drivers/etc/
there you find a file called HOSTS. It seems to be used by windows to translate certain IP adresses to URL's. When I opened it in Notepad, i found a complete list with all the blocked websites. Their IP were relocated to my local host ip 127.0.0.1.. That caused the 'server not found' pop-up. So i simply renamed that file to something like Hosts_Infected (to make sure i could re-install it when necessairy).
The problem was SOLVED!!
I could update a new dat through the automatic update function of Skybot... and all the websites were accesible again.
I guess i was infected with a gaobot kind of worm. The worn was somehow desinfected by one of my virus/spyware programs but strangely it kept the HOSTS filed unchanged.
Check out if the bot is still active!

Hi all again,

no help with those ideas for me, though I have had and removed cool web search before (try cwshredder to remove it), the hosts file is normal, windows messaging host is off.....
One other thing tho - whenever I receive emails the first letter of the attachment extension is changed 9 .doc become .Zoc  (always a capital Z).  As I'm using netscape - not IE - I didn't think avast was in the picture.  Any other ideas?
