MSCONFIG
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:08:38 PM »
Hi there,

Do you smart people use the msconfig utility for a selective startup?

I have 4 gigs of physical ram & my page file is set at 4986 MB min & max.

Hoping to hear your thoughts,

Thanks.

Yezinki.

Smart or not, I use the utility in a limited way...it's a good utility to check out the start-up configuration.  However, some other utilities has a similar function.  For example, CCleaner allows you to control on startup, to some extent.

No. I use StartupDelayer to control the order of loading programs at startup that does not follow a strict order in Windows.

No.
Try Startup Delayer.
This freeware controls the windows startup (Windows 98\Me\2k\XP\Vista) that does not follow a strict order.

You can set some applications to start very after the boot (logon) itself.  ;)
They will manage the execution of programs that are automatically started by the operating system at logon time. Instead of executing many programs at once (causing your OS to spit and sputter and attack your hard drive), StartRight will give the OS time to execute the program before running the next program. The OS should become much more responsive almost imediately after logon.

Since avast! version 4.7.807 the Standard Shield has a feature called do not scan system libraries (by default on) that dramatically decrease the number of files scanned during computer boot.

Even the free version allows those functions. This is one of those programs that deserved my support and investment. :)

Thanks Tech & darth_mikey,

Tech using Startup Delayer while editing a application, what changes do you make, like ......Launch type.....Normal to minimized?

What about Delay & other parameters like Label, Target, Parameters, Delay, Start In, Pause Startup Delayer until application is closed ?

To me none is important on this Sony machine.....so how do I configure em.......uncheck them all.........or how do I make use of the Edit options?

Winpatrol is more confusing.

Thanks.

darth_mikey using winpatrol how long should be the delay for appls not required at startup......30, 40, 50 secs?

Or should I give a different timings to each, for a delayed start?

Avast should be at normal?

Thanks.

Hi Yezinki -

I will add my favorite to this by saying I use the Startup tab in this program ... What's Running. Unchecking the box next to an entry prevents startup of a program but, as with any such program, please be careful what you uncheck.

You can read about it at the link below ......

Hi CharleyO,

If it's just to uncheck, than why not use msconfig & uncheck there?

Why use this programs/appls?

Thanks.

Well, for me, it is easier to use and shows more information.

Start > Run > type in (or select from list) msconfig > click OK > click Startup tab

against ...

Double click destop icon > click Startup tab
