bear, of course Alwil team must say something.
I can only make a shot: you seem to have installation troubles because your Chest is not working. Did you try to 'repair' avast installation (through Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs apllet)?

Doesn't the path to the avast folder contain any non-English characters?

Check the folder <avast>\data\chest.
Is there a file called index.xml?

Is there write access to this folder? (in Explorer - > Properties -> Security).

Thanks

Into Windows Explorer go to Tools, Folder Options and on the second tab search the option called 'simple share' (sorry, I'm trying to translate into English). You must 'disable' simple sharing of the folders.

After that, right click that folder and choose 'Permitions' or 'Security' and see if the user (you, your loggin name) has 'write' access to that folder.

Hope this help.

But I don't have that if I do I can't find it.I have Windows 98SE

Sorry, this feature is only for Windows 2000/XP and NTFS file system  :-[

How do I fix this, also with these errors do I have protection from viruses?

Problems with Chest are not exactly 'un-protection'. You could be protected although without the Chest working properly...
Let's try again: is there any file which is causing this or this behavior occurs for all files (Chest does not work for any file...)?  :'(
